I am Moving

Only in the WWW sense though.

Since this blog was created (way back in October 2007) it has always lived at blog.ianburnett.com. The main idea was that I would have a more serious website of www.ianburnett.com, with my blog being slightly less so. I would also have gallery.ianburnett.com to showcase my photography highlights, plus a couple of private websites for photos of Lucy and a wedding I went to back in 2007.

These days, however, it’s a struggle keeping on top of security for every individual site. Before a brief spring-clean this morning, I had the following:

  • A Joomla 1.0 site (loads of security holes)
  • A Joomla 1.5.1 site (quite a few security holes)
  • A Joomla 1.5.2 site (some security holes)
  • A WordPress 2.6 site (quite a few security holes)
  • My main WordPress 2.8 site (no known security holes)
  • Three Gallery 2.3 sites (no security holes, but quite a bit of admin)

That’s a lot of admin to look after. Neither do I need a heavyweight main website plus my blog, so they’re merging. This blog will eventually reside at www.ianburnett.com, with an automatic redirect covering any old links you may have. I will be dropping the mostly unknown gallery.ianburnett.com, in favour of a link to my Flickr site (which is now a pro account due to being a BT Internet customer). Let someone else look after the security!

Hopefully, nothing will break during this – bear with me while this change takes place. I’ll post again when things are updated and finalised.

Report Card

If my blog were marked alongside the GCSE exams then we can be sure of a few things:

  • It wouldn’t get lost in some farcical mishap involving a train and a briefcase
  • Full marks would be awarded for consistency of layout
  • The final mark would read “must try harder”

Trouble is, you see, June has been so monumentally busy that I’ve lost track of time. During the time since my last blog entry (24th May) there’s been a whole host of things happened. Given that I only get a chance to blog at weekends, things have been quite sparse on the update front:

  • A barbeque (thanks Sharon and Chris)
  • A wedding (congratulations Rhys and Nicola)
  • A trip to Sunderland (long drive!)
  • Another wedding (congratulations Natasha and Chris)
  • A birthday party for a 4-year-old
  • The in-laws visiting for a weekend
  • A week in Devon with said relatives
  • A birthday for Katrina

All of that in just 4 weeks. I don’t remember having that much of a social life at university… maybe I don’t remember it for a reason though…

Added to this was the unfortunate incident of spilling a good quantity of lemonade into the keyboard. This has ended up making my “E” key very sticky and hard to press. Combine that with my naturalisation onto my work laptop and suddenly typing on my home PC keyboard feels quite wrong. Every keystroke is just a little too stretched to be comfortable.

Hopefully normal blogging will resume soon(ish). Now where’s that magical time-machine gone?

Round-Up

I’ve been sitting here finishing off bits of blog entries which I’ve started recently, but never got round to finishing. Here’s a quick recap for stuff you might have missed.

Furthest back is the cautionary tale of trying to have a shower while in a hotel, although I should be thankful at least that I had lights while doing so. I’ve added some thoughts on whether resolution actually matters in a digital camera, and then been thankful for the most basic of data entry devices. More recently, we’ve been shopping for shoes, but only after my inept display of romance.

I’m Not the Only One

Apparently I’m not the only one with “communications issues”.

I mentioned a while back about being very busy and just not blogging, but I’m not the only guilty party here in my own little web world. The Maple Man (i.e. smaplehost) has also been quite lax in his blogging activity, despite what he claimed via MSN today.

Six entries in a year does not make a blogger – a bit like 36 points does not make a Premiership football team, eh Maples? At least you can take some consolation in the fact that your girlfriend’s team will probably stuff us live on Setanta later today.
